I find that when I go home to Greece my Greek picks up instantly...hearing all the time etc. but I do tend to speak English a lot especially with my dad and friends on the phone so I then forget some new words quickly...but if speak from day one till the end I leave the country fluent.....but to be honest I am fluent anyway....but nonetheless the language is very very hard. Its so much better to actually go to the country and excercise the language as opposed to just learning it with a teacher and not be exposed to the culture.

I am with ya'll on this one! I LIVED in Panama when I was a young girl, VISITED Costa Rica, and my father is a Spanish TEACHER!! At times I'm not sure if I understood him speaking Spanish, or maybe just the tone in which he was speaking to me...

That's totally it! I felt I made progress my second day, but since then I feel I have only learned more ways to speak badly.

From Crystal Torres on 12.18.07 @ 01:02 PM

Whenever I go to Mexico for the first three days I'm so excited to take out my rusty Spanish and speak to anyone. By the end of the week I'm in a fetal position in the corner rocking back and forth with my hands over my ears going la-la-la-la-la because I'm sure if my brain tries to translate one more word it will melt into a useless blob. Some day I hope to be fluent, but I'm not there yet.
