Maybe it would be more accurate to quote a more direct source. Here are the words of Miguel Algarín as he recollects the events that followed the death of Miguel Piñero:
“The wake would be accompanied by great food, drink and recitals. In the midst of this rejoicing, Bob Holman approached me and said, ‘Miguel, it’s time to reopen the Cafe. This is the moment, you know, and Miky is insisting on it, and we are ready. Let’s move on it, let’s open the Nuyorican Poets Cafe again.’”
- from the introduction of Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe
As to your second question; Yes, I do believe the financial success of the Friday Night Slams has sustained the Nuyorican for all these years but the true cultural capital of the Nuyorican and, in my opinion, any venue steeped in oral tradition would be in the caliber of the poets who have graced the mic.
Thanks for quoting from Cristin’s book, I am definitely looking forward to reading through it. |

i know that bob holman is one of the founders of the friday night slam at the nuyorican poets cafe but i do not think it is historically accurate to list him as a founder of the nuyorican poets cafe. those poets would be miguel algarín, mikey piñero, pedro pietri alongside bimbo rivas, lucky cienfuegos and others.
have a great decemeber, oscar. |
